Complementary Therapies

 Therapies

Hiraeth offers a range of complementary therapies for companies, institutions, individuals and groups; often as part of a package with other services. These therapies are an important complement to medical health services as they cater to the whole individual as opposed to the medical condition per se. This maximizes human development.

There are literally hundreds of complementary therapies which cater for individual client needs. Some of the more recognized interventions include: homeopathy, aromatherapy, acupuncture, herbal remedies, meditation and yoga. Complementary therapies can be used to treat and manage many different health conditions. They can also give people a better sense of control over their lives and improve their over all well-being.

‘The managers of a residential therapeutic community where I developed my career recognized the stress that their staff were under and enlisted subsidized complementary therapies. At first we had weekly access to a Chinese form of massage called ‘Tui Na’. It produced deep relaxation and I gained considerable awareness of my body. I learned how to manage the negative effects that a stressful working environment can have on my body. I remember feeling important and that the company cared for its workers. It was a little bit of ‘me time’ that I valued. I demonstrated the affirmation that I felt with a deep commitment and loyalty to my work and to best practice.

The Tui Na practitioner left the company and I certainly felt the loss for a few months. That is until the managers introduced Reiki and Indian Head Massage for its staff. At first I was apprehensive and sceptical about the approaches. However, the experience changed this. Reiki provided me with deep warmth of relaxation and surprising insight into conditions I had previously been aware of but ignored. Indian Head Massage offered vital time-out and nourishment for my over-worked brain which was constantly on the go for long hours due to the challenges of managing disadvantaged and dysfunctional young people.’
